THE CHALLENGE:

A commercial hydroponic vegetable farm in Gatton, Queensland, specialising in Asian leafy vegetables including bok choy and pak choy, faced persistent blue-green algae contamination that threatened irrigation water quality and crop production.

The farm’s primary water source, a 3.5 megalitre pond covering 1,750 square metres with an average depth of 5 metres, exhibited:

  • Characteristic blue-green algae slicks across the pond surface
  • Visible green coloration indicating significant cyanobacterial biomass
  • Stagnant water conditions with minimal natural circulation
  • Compromised water quality unsuitable for hydroponic irrigation systems
  • Risk to food safety compliance and crop health

Traditional single-method algae management approaches had proven inadequate for sustained control, with rapid recontamination occurring under favourable conditions. The farm required a solution that would eliminate existing algae whilst preventing recurrence, all while maintaining irrigation water quality suitable for food crop production.

OUR SOLUTION:

BioRemedy developed and implemented an integrated treatment strategy combining three complementary approaches to address both immediate algae control and long-term prevention:

Chemical Intervention

  • Agritech Algaecide: Applied at 2.94 parts per million concentration (5 litres total) for rapid knockdown of existing algae populations

Mechanical Systems

  • Three-Phase Brio Circulator: Installed to provide continuous water movement throughout the pond, exploiting blue-green algae’s sensitivity to circulation
  • Force 7 Aerator: Enhanced dissolved oxygen levels to create aerobic conditions favouring beneficial microorganisms over pathogenic species

Biological Treatment

  • EcoShock Beneficial Bacteria: Applied weekly at 1.5 kilograms per application over eight weeks to establish competitive microbial populations and reduce nutrient availability supporting algae growth

This multi-modal approach addressed both acute algae problems and underlying causative factors, creating sustainable water quality improvements that maintained irrigation suitability throughout the treatment period.

THE RESULTS:

The integrated treatment approach delivered rapid and sustained improvements in water quality:

Immediate Results

  • Rapid clearance of visible algae slicks within 48 hours of chemical treatment
  • Water coloration improved from distinctive green tint to clear conditions suitable for irrigation
  • Successful knockdown of existing algae populations without adverse effects on irrigation water quality

Sustained Improvements

  • Mechanical circulation systems prevented algae recolonisation through continuous water movement
  • Enhanced dissolved oxygen levels created aerobic conditions supporting beneficial microorganisms
  • Improved water freshness with enhanced clarity and reduced organic odours within one week
  • Absence of algae reformation maintained throughout monitoring period

Long-Term Benefits

  • Stable microbial populations established through biological treatment provided ongoing nutrient processing
  • Competitive exclusion mechanisms prevented pathogenic microorganism establishment
  • Sustained algae control without requiring repeated chemical applications
  • Continued irrigation water quality suitable for hydroponic vegetable production

WHY THIS MATTERS:

This project demonstrates the effectiveness of integrated treatment strategies for agricultural water systems facing blue-green algae challenges. The successful implementation offers several key insights for agricultural water managers:

  1. Multi-Modal Effectiveness: Combined chemical, mechanical, and biological approaches proved superior to single-method treatments, addressing both symptoms and root causes
  2. Operational Continuity: Treatment maintained irrigation water quality throughout intervention, avoiding production disruptions or crop schedule compromises
  3. Economic Viability: Initial capital investment in mechanical systems provided ongoing benefits that reduced recurring chemical requirements
  4. Food Safety Compatibility: All treatment components met agricultural water quality standards without compromising crop safety or market acceptability
  5. Sustainable Prevention: Biological treatments established conditions resistant to algae reestablishment, reducing long-term management requirements

ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY:

Brio Circulator

  • Three-phase circulation system providing continuous water movement
  • Designed to exploit blue-green algae’s documented sensitivity to water flow
  • Prevents formation of stagnant zones supporting algae recolonisation

Force 7 Aerator

  • Enhanced dissolved oxygen transfer throughout the water column
  • Creates aerobic conditions favouring beneficial microorganisms
  • Promotes uniform nutrient distribution and prevents thermal stratification

Agritech Algaecide

  • Copper-based formulation for rapid algae knockdown
  • Applied at precise concentrations to ensure effectiveness whilst maintaining irrigation water suitability

EcoShock Beneficial Bacteria

  • Specialised bacterial formulation targeting nutrient processing and organic matter decomposition
  • Establishes competitive microbial populations for ongoing algae prevention
  • Applied weekly over eight weeks for stable community establishment

IMPLEMENTATION APPROACH:

The integrated treatment was carefully coordinated to maximise effectiveness:

  1. Initial Assessment: Comprehensive evaluation of pond conditions and algae contamination levels
  2. Chemical Treatment: Agritech algaecide application for immediate algae control
  3. Mechanical Installation: Professional installation of circulation and aeration systems by qualified contractors
  4. Biological Establishment: Weekly beneficial bacteria applications over eight-week period
  5. Ongoing Monitoring: Regular assessment of water quality and system performance

This systematic approach ensured each treatment component contributed optimally to overall algae management objectives whilst maintaining operational requirements for continued agricultural production.
