THE CHALLENGE:

A South East Queensland country club faced a critical water quality crisis in August 2025 when routine monitoring revealed a severe cyanobacterial bloom in their 500m2 ornamental pond.

Laboratory analysis identified dangerous conditions. Microcystis aeruginosa reached 1,350,000 cells per millilitre, representing a highly toxic cyanobacterial species. Total cyanobacteria biovolume measured 88.7 cubic millimetres per litre, exceeding Red Alert Level thresholds by more than 20-fold. The water was classified as unfit for human contact under the NHMRC Recreational Cyanobacteria Alert framework, presenting immediate public health risks to facility members and visitors.

The timing was critical. The facility needed an immediate, effective solution that would rapidly restore water quality without extended closure, protecting both public safety and the club’s operations.

The 1,250-cubic-metre water body served aesthetic and recreational purposes within facility grounds, with visual access from club amenities and walking paths frequented by members and visitors. The severity of contamination, combined with the need to minimise operational disruption, demanded a rapid-response treatment strategy.

OUR SOLUTION:

BioRemedy implemented a targeted copper-based algaecide treatment specifically designed to eliminate the toxic cyanobacterial bloom whilst minimising operational disruption.

The treatment utilised a single application protocol with copper ethylenediamine complex algaecide applied at 4 parts per million across the entire 1,250-cubic-metre water body. Treatment was executed on 7 August 2025, the same day laboratory results confirmed Red Alert Level conditions. Approximately 5 litres of product was carefully calculated based on total water volume and target species characteristics. The product was diluted and distributed across the pond surface where cyanobacterial cells were concentrated, applied under calm weather conditions to ensure even distribution and optimal contact with target organisms.

The copper ethylenediamine complex formulation was selected for its proven efficacy against Microcystis species, enhanced stability across varying pH ranges, and suitability for recreational water body applications. This formulation maintains copper in solution more effectively than simple copper sulphate products, ensuring sustained contact with target cyanobacterial cells for maximum effectiveness.

THE RESULTS:

Post-treatment monitoring conducted 12 days after application demonstrated remarkable improvements in water quality.

Cyanobacteria Elimination

  • Microcystis aeruginosa: Completely eliminated with zero cells detected in post-treatment samples (100% removal of toxic species)
  • Total cyanobacteria biovolume: Reduced from 88.7 to 0.2 cubic millimetres per litre (99.8% reduction)
  • Total cyanobacteria cell counts: Decreased from 1,435,000 to 26,440 cells per millilitre (98.2% reduction)

Alert Level Transition

The water body transitioned from Red Alert Level (water unfit for human contact) to Green Alert Level (water suitable for recreational use with continued monitoring).

Ecological Recovery

Remaining cyanobacteria comprised only non-toxic species including Aphanocapsa, Synechocystis, and Komvophoron. Green algae populations increased nearly nine-fold to 89,560 cells per millilitre, indicating restoration of balanced phytoplankton community. Diatom populations remained stable, demonstrating selective targeting of harmful species. A diverse green algae community was established, including Ankistrodesmus, Monoraphidium, Scenedesmus, and Kirchneriella species.

The facility was able to safely reopen the water body for recreational use within two weeks of treatment, meeting all regulatory requirements for public health protection.

WHY THIS MATTERS:

This project demonstrates how rapid-response algaecide treatment can successfully address severe cyanobacterial blooms in recreational water bodies whilst protecting public health and maintaining operational continuity. For facility managers facing similar challenges at golf courses, country clubs, and sports facilities, this approach offers several critical advantages.

The swift transition from Red Alert to Green Alert Level within 12 days minimises human health risk exposure and demonstrates responsive management of water quality crises. Rapid water quality restoration reduces facility closure duration, minimising member dissatisfaction and potential revenue impacts from amenity closures. The single-application protocol requires minimal material costs (approximately 5 litres for 1,250 cubic metres) and reduced labour requirements compared to extended treatment programmes or capital-intensive infrastructure installations.

The treatment methodology using NATA accredited laboratory analysis provides defensible documentation suitable for regulatory compliance and risk management purposes. Selective targeting of toxic cyanobacteria whilst promoting diverse green algae communities indicates restoration of healthier water conditions. With climate change increasing the frequency and intensity of cyanobacterial blooms across Australia, facility managers require reliable tools that deliver measurable outcomes quickly.

For country clubs and similar facilities operating under budget constraints, the ability to resolve water quality crises rapidly and cost-effectively represents significant value whilst meeting contemporary water management principles.

ABOUT THE ALGAECIDE:

The copper-based algaecide used in this treatment features several key characteristics that contributed to its effectiveness.

Active Ingredient Composition

The copper ethylenediamine complex provides enhanced stability and bioavailability compared to simple copper sulphate formulations. This chelated formulation maintains copper in solution across wider pH ranges, reducing precipitation and ensuring sustained contact with target cyanobacterial cells.

How It Works

The algaecide disrupts photosynthetic processes and cellular metabolism in cyanobacteria. It selectively targets cyanobacterial species whilst minimising impacts on beneficial phytoplankton groups. Rapid cellular uptake ensures swift bloom control.

Application Parameters

The dosing rate was 4 parts per million across total water volume, requiring approximately 5 litres for 1,250 cubic metres. Surface application was employed where cyanobacterial cells concentrate. Water hardness provides protective buffering, reducing toxicity risks to non-target aquatic organisms.

Performance Characteristics

The product demonstrates proven efficacy against Microcystis species, one of Australia’s most problematic toxic cyanobacteria. The single-application protocol minimises labour and treatment complexity. It is suitable for recreational water bodies where rapid results are essential and compatible with NHMRC guidelines and Australian water quality frameworks.

The formulation’s stability and targeted action make it particularly suitable for facilities requiring immediate intervention to protect public health whilst maintaining water quality suitable for recreational use.

IMPLEMENTATION APPROACH:

The treatment protocol was carefully coordinated to ensure rapid response whilst maintaining documentation for regulatory compliance:

  • Initial Assessment (7 August 2025): Water samples were collected from the ornamental pond and submitted to Ecoscope Environmental Laboratory, a NATA accredited facility (Laboratory Number 14956). Laboratory analysis was conducted using Method QP25-1, accredited for compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 Testing standards. Results confirmed Red Alert Level conditions requiring immediate intervention.
  • Treatment Calculation and Application (7 August 2025): Algaecide dosage was calculated at 4 parts per million based on total water body volume of 1,250 cubic metres. The product was diluted in water and applied across the pond surface under calm weather conditions. Treatment was applied to the upper water layer where cyanobacterial cells were concentrated, with water temperature and ambient conditions recorded.
  • Post-Treatment Monitoring (19 August 2025): Water samples were collected 12 days after treatment using identical protocols and submitted to Ecoscope Environmental Laboratory for analysis. Comprehensive phytoplankton identification and enumeration was conducted across all taxonomic groups, with particular focus on cyanobacteria species composition, cell counts, and biovolume measurements.

This systematic approach ensured treatment efficacy whilst providing defensible documentation for regulatory compliance and public health decision-making. The use of NATA accredited laboratory analysis at both pre-treatment and post-treatment stages provided reliable, comparable data suitable for facility management and regulatory reporting purposes.
